Appalachian Valley Small Breed Canine Recipe with Venison & Garbanzo Beans is rated out of 5 by 96.Rated 5 out of 5 by Alyssa from New Flavor, Happy Dogs This is the first time we have added this flavor to the dog food mix, and the dogs LOVE it. This flavor was an INSTANT hit. We have a base recipe, then we mix in a second, different recipe, to mix it up a little (see below). We have tried at least half of the formulas available at our Local Tractor Supply, and some where liked better than others. In a bucket, we mix a 15-lbs bag of TOTW High Prairie with Roasted Bison & Roasted Venison (in the yellow bag), and 2 (two) 5-lbs bags of other TOTW flavors. I don't like to eat the same food/flavor twice a day, every day, for weeks on end, so we try to add the variety for the dogs too.Date published: 2018-12-07Rated 5 out of 5 by Virginia905 from Our picky eater Roxy loves it!! Our dog Roxy is a picky pup. We rescued her in December 2016. She was diagnosed with Lyme shortly after and her appetite was up and down. She would show some interest in other brands of kibble but would lose interest quick. We had to put her on a bland diet a few times and each time we gradually introduced a new kibble. We tried out the Taste of the Wild, Appalachian valley and she loves it! She chows it right down. This is the longest she has shown interest in food since we’ve had her. We are more than happy with Taste of the Wild pet food. I wouldn’t choose any other dog food.Date published: 2018-04-22Rated 5 out of 5 by Bella Boo from The best food for my best friend! My dog Bella has a very sensitive stomach and a lot of the pet food available gives her tummy aches, diarrhea, etc. I had been feeding her a leading brand of food that I thought had to be high quality because it was very expensive. But it bothered her tummy. I was researching a new food to give her and found Taste of the Wild (TotW). I was skeptical because I didn't think a food could have quality ingredients at such a good price! I decided to give it a shot and I'm so happy I did! Not only are her tummy issues resolved, but she's like a whole new dog. She went from being lethargic and lazy, to spunky and full of life! TotW includes everything you want in a dog food formula, and excludes everything you don't.Date published: 2022-05-01Rated 5 out of 5 by Waffles from Nom Nom Nom We recently switched from TOTW Pacific Stream to Appalachian Valley Small Breed... Mr. Waffles loves it! Easier for his little mouth to chew, he gets even MORE excited for meal time now!Date published: 2018-04-21Rated 4 out of 5 by renee from our dogs loved it we have been feeding our own dogs, taste of the wild for several years now. Mainly because I liked that it was grain free and did not have rosemary extract in it. Because rosemary extract causes seizures in one of my dogs. We personally own nine dogs. And have seven foster dogs. Recently, I had to stop buying taste of the wild. Because of the big price increase. We can no longer afford it. And had to switch over to a Sam’s Club generic namebrand food over there’s that doesn’t have any rosemary extract in it. I really wish I could have continued with taste of the wild, but having as many dogs as we have and the price increase hurt us badly.Date published: 2023-11-13Rated 5 out of 5 by Tiffany28 from High Quality, Trustworthy Food I've been feeding my Pomeranian Taste of the Wild since he was a pup and he's now going on 5 years. I chose this brand because I wanted higher quality/healthier food to feed him. He has never fussed over mealtime. Also, this food has never made him ill. I was thrilled when my local store started stocking the small breed formula. My only wish is that they would make more flavors in the small breed formula!Date published: 2018-08-10Rated 5 out of 5 by Donna50 from My Chi loves this food!!!! She has been eating Taste of the Wild venison for a year and loves it. The first picture is how excited she gets when I get the bag out to feed her.Date published: 2018-04-22Rated 5 out of 5 by eric from My teckels love this very happy with this product line ! The best dog's food for me !Date published: 2016-10-11My Pomeranian has seizures & I was told that Appalachian Valley™ Small Breed Canine Formula has no carbs. Is this correct ? I just started him on it 2 days ago. There are very few companies that do not use rice, potato or sweet potato & yours doesn't, but
Hi, Taylor. Our Appalachian Valley formula has higher protein and fat percentages and therefore has the lowest carbohydrate content of all of our diets; this formula contains 26.5% carbohydrates as fed. If you still have questions, please feel free to speak with one of our product specialists at 800-342-4808. And of course, we always recommend talking with your veterinarian when considering switching food.Date published: 2017-02-13Looking at the ingredients between this and the High Prairie seem identical. I have two GoldenDoodles and was wondering if I could feed them this formula as they love the venison and size. I feed them according to the chart for the High Prairie.
Hello, you’re right, our Appalachian Valley and High Prairie Canine formula are similar. However, the two formulas have slight differentiations, such as the main sources of protein – venison vs. buffalo and roasted bison. Both formulas were developed as maintenance diets for active adult dogs. While the kibble size of our Appalachian Valley Canine Formula was designed specifically for small breed dogs, it can be fed to any size dog. These two formulas have the same amount of calories per cup and therefore, the recommended feeding amounts are the identical.Date published: 2017-07-10should i have concerns about your food and the FDA's noticed rise in cardio issues with feeding grain-free foods with legumes as the main ingredients?
Hello and thanks for reaching out. As you saw, the FDA is investigating a previously unknown but potential link between a condition called DCM, or dilated cardiomyopathy, and grain-free foods. Because taurine deficiency can be associated with DCM, a possible link between diet and the diagnosis is being explored. While no direct links have been made, we recognize taurine as a beneficial supplement, and it is included in all TOTW recipes, including Appalachian Valley. We want to assure you that our #1 priority is the health and safety of all pets. Our Veterinary Director would be more than happy to help answer any additional questions you might have. We adhere to stringent food safety protocols, including having our formulas undergo a carefully controlled cooking process. Hello, Lorraine and thanks for reaching out. We have five manufacturing facilities, all located in the United States: two in California, one in Missouri, one in South Carolina and one in Arkansas. Additionally, Taste of the Wild is and has always been a wholly owned brand of Diamond Pet Foods, a family owned and operated business. Hello. Whether or not your Westie will lose weight on Appalachian Valley really depends on his total calorie intake. To lose weight, you will need to feed him less calories than you were previously. Appalachian Valley was specifically designed with higher protein and fat levels for finicky small dogs, so they can eat smaller portions and still meet their nutritional requirements. Sierra Mountain and Pine Forest are lower in calories and would also be good choices for your Westie.Date published: 2018-06-04How do I know which meat is best for my dogs? I just bought the lamb formula but I was confused by all the choices. Both my dogs are small mixed breeds one is 12lbs and other is 24lbs.
Hello Bobbi, great question! Meat is often a flavor preference for dogs, however, some owners may specifically choose a certain meat due to allergies or food sensitives. For instance, if your dog suffers from skin allergies, we often recommend our Pacific Stream or Sierra Mountain recipes, due to their limited protein sources. More so, we recommend choosing a recipe for your dog based on lifestyle, life stage and size. For example, our High Prairie and Wetlands recipes, made with higher fat, protein and calorie levels, are best suited for high-energy dogs. We also have a recipe developed specifically for small breed dogs like yours: Appalachian Valley, an energy dense recipe with a smaller kibble size. If you have additional questions or would like a specific recipe recommendation, please give us a call at 1-800-342-4808 (8 a.m. - 5 p.m. CT weekdays).Date published: 2018-12-14Which dry dog food formula has the lowest sodium content and what is the percent please?

Hello, Sandra and thanks for your question! Our Appalachian Valley Small-Breed Canine Recipe contains 0.40% sodium on an as-fed basis.Date published: 2019-01-16Which product is recommended low sodium for heart and kidney?
Hello and thanks for your question! While we do not offer any sodium-restricted diets or prescription diets for medical conditions at this time, our Pacific Stream Canine and Southwest Canyon Canine Recipes offer the lowest amount of sodium at 0.25% as-fed. We recommend consulting your veterinarian regarding the best diet for your dog based on his or her needs.Date published: 2019-12-19Legumes and peas do I need to worry about my dogs heart as I'm reading ? Zoey loves this food albeit.
Hello, and thanks for reaching out. It’s important to know that to date, the FDA still has not found any science-based causes that link diet or ingredients, including peas and legumes, to DCM. Our pet nutrition and veterinary experts select all of our ingredients with the health and well-being of pets in mind. Peas and legumes are included in our grain-free recipes because they are great sources of protein, fiber and antioxidants, and they help to make those recipes complete and balanced. All of our recipes meet both the FDA and the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) guidelines and are complete and balanced. One of them is gaining and the other is not. Help
Hi, Bree. Whether or not your overweight dachshund loses weight on Appalachian Valley depends on his total calorie intake. To lose weight, you will need to feed him less calories than you were previously (and or utilize more via exercise). This may require trying a lower calorie formula such as our Sierra Mountain Canine. Please give us a call at 1-800-342-4808 or email us by visiting https://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/contact-us/ for a more specific feeding recommendation based on his body weight.Date published: 2018-01-16Is the Appalachian Formula for small dogs poultry free?
Hi Madge. While not one of the primary protein sources, Appalachian Valley does contain duck meal and egg product. You may want to consider either our Pacific Stream Puppy Formula (for all life stages) or our Pacific Stream Canine formula (for adult dogs).Date published: 2017-01-22
